Abstract

A cleansing composition comprises (a) a solid water-soluble bromine or iodine salt, e.g. an alkali-metal or alkaline-earth metal salt, (b) a solid chlorine-releasing compound, e.g. trichloroisocyanuric acid, chloramine T or dichloramine T, and (c) a solid surface-active agent, e.g. an alkyl sulphate, aryl sulphonate or polyoxyalkylene compound, the amount of (b) being sufficient to decompose at least a substantial part of (a). Preferably a solid acid such as sulphamic acid, or an acid-reacting salt such as an acid salt of phosphoric or sulphuric acid, is incorporated in an amount sufficient to produce a pH value of from 4 to 7 when the composition is dissolved in water. In a modification, when an iodine salt is used (b) is replaced by a bromine-releasing compound.ALSO:A cleansing and sterilizing composition comprises a solid, water-soluble bromine or iodine salt, e.g. the alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salts, a solid chlorine-releasing compound, e.g. trichloroisocyanuric acid, chloramine T and dichloramine T, and a solid surface-active agent, the amount of the chlorine-releasing compound being sufficient to decompose at least a substantial part of the halogen salt. Preferably a solid acid e.g. sulphamic acid or acid-reacting salt e.g. an acid salt of phosphoric or sulphuric acid is incorporated in an amount sufficient to produce a pH value of from 4 to 7 when the composition is dissolved in water. In a modification, when an iodine salt is used, the chlorine-releasing compound is replaced by a bromine-releasing compound.
