Abstract

Inhibitors for use with sulphuric acid in pickling or cleaning metals consist of derivatives of 4-thiazolone particularly those containing divalent substituents, e.g. oxygen, sulphur, or an imino group, in the 2 position, or those containing hydrogen or a monovalent hydrocarbon radical in the 3 position, or those substituted in both of the above ways. Examples given are rhodanin, pseudo-thio-hydantoin (2-imino-4-thiazolone), diphenyl-pseudo-thio-hydantoin (2-phenylimino-3-phenyl-4-thiazolone) and 2-4-diketothiazolidine. These derivatives, which are only slightly soluble in dilute acids, are added either in finely powdered form, or in solution in concentrated sulphuric or other acid, or in the form of soluble salts, e.g. a solution of rhodanin in ammonia or caustic alkali may be used. Foam producing agents, e.g. sulphite cellulose waste or molasses residues may be mixed with the inhibitor or with the solution of the inhibitor in acid or alkali.ALSO:Inhibitors for use with sulphuric, hydrochloric, or acetic acid, sodium bisulphate solution &c. in pickling or cleaning metals consist of derivatives of 4-thiazolone, particularly those containing divalent substituents, e.g. oxygen, sulphur or an imino group, in the 2 position, or those containing hydrogen or a monovalent hydrocarbon radical in the 3 position, or those substituted in both of the above ways. Examples given are rhodanin, pseudo-thiohydantoin (2-imino-4-thiazolone), diphenyl-pseudo-thio-hydantoin (2-phenylimino-3-phenyl-4-thiazolone) and 2-4-diketothiazolidine.
