Abstract

A bleaching composition in powder form, suitable for bleaching textiles, comprises an intimate mixture of an alkali metal chlorate and chlorite together with an acid-reacting salt, e.g. sodium persulphate, and sufficient of a carbon dioxide-yielding salt, i.e. a salt which in an acid reacting aqueous solution will yield carbon dioxide, e.g. an alkali carbonate, to counteract the fire-promoting properties of the chlorate. The proportion by weight of chlorite is preferably slightly in excess of the proportion by weight of chlorate, and when sodium carbonate is the carbon dioxide-yielding salt its proportion is preferably greater than the combined properties of chlorate and chlorite.
