Abstract
High purity sodium fluoride is produced by mixing and agitating at least stoichiometric quantities of solid sodium chloride with a solution of a water-soluble fluoride (e.g. NH4F and/or KF) containing 60-120 gm. fluoride ion per litre and filtering the precipitated NaF. The reaction is effected at such a temperature (e.g. 15-70 DEG C.), and with such excess of NaCl, that the solubility limit of the respective chlorides is not exceeded. The initial solution may be obtained by the ammoniation of fluosilicic acid or sodium or potassium fluosilicate and may contain 70-100 gm. per litre of fluoride ion. 105-200% of the stoichiometric quantity of sodium chloride may be added. The solid sodium chloride may be slurried with a quantity of water or wash water from a previous batch and the fluoride solution added to the resulting slurry. If the initial solution has a concentration above 100 gm. fluoride ion per litre, it is diluted with water, wash water or sodium chloride solution to give 70-100 gm. per litre of fluoride ion.
