Abstract

<PICT:0742195/III/1> Ferrous metals are pickled with recovery of the pickling acid by pickling in a closed chamber with sulphuric acid and gaseous HCl., supersaturating the liquor with HCl to precipitate FeCl2, separating the crystals and heating to decompose them into HCl and iron oxide. The FeCl2 crystals may be washed with concentrated hydrochloric acid before the thermal decomposition. The apparatus comprises a pickling chamber 1 with acid sprays 3 playing on the material 4 to be treated. Gaseous HCl enters from a pipe 5. The pasty mass 6 consisting of acid and FeCl2 crystals passes to a reaction vessel 13 into which gaesous HCl is also injected. A centrifuge moves the acid for recycling through pipe 9 and the crystals pass into a furnace 10. HCl is given off and recycled through a condenser 11 to remove water. Iron oxide is removed from the chamber at 12. The reaction chamber 13 is optional. The concentration of sulphuric acid should not exceed 40 per cent. The ratio of FeSO4: H2O: H2SO4: H2O for optimum conditions is 1 : 1-1.45 : 8.8-1.42. The HCl : air ratio in the chamber should not be less than 1 : 4.
