Abstract

<PICT:0793700/III/1> A melt or solution of magnesium, ferrous or ferric chloride or sulphate or calcium chloride is sprayed into a hot gas, preferably in counter-current, water vapour being present in the case of a chloride, sc as to produce the corresponding metal oxide, and hydrogen chloride or sulphur dioxide and trioxide. The hot gas may be at a temperature of 750-1100 DEG C. The height of the chamber may be 3-10 m. The time of contact may be 5-20 sec. The size of the particles of sprayed liquid is preferably 50-200 m . The hot gas may be producer gas or gas produced by the combustion of gaseous or liquid fuel. Magnesium chloride may be decomposed by gas at 900 DEG C. produced by the combustion of solar oil. Magnesium chloride containing one or more of the compounds calcium, sodium and potassium chloride, e.g. as obtained from the mother liquor remaining after the crystallization of carmallite, may be used. The reaction may be conducted such that these chloride impurities are not decomposed, so that the resulting magnesium oxide may be purified by washing with water. The hydrogen chloride also produced may be recovered by washing with water or hydrochloric acid. The lower limit for the concentration of hydrogen chloride in the gas produced, for efficient operation is considered to be 7 per cent. In the case of magnesium chloride this concentration is produced at a temperature of 500 DEG C. As shown, sprayed liquid from nozzle 4 is decomposed in a reactor 1 by hot gas introduced through pipe 7. The oxide produced is withdrawn at 3, while the resulting gas passes through a cyclone separator 9 and then through a scrubber 12 in counter-current to an absorbent liquid.
