Abstract
Sulphuric acid is recovered from waste pickle liquor by adding concentrated sulphuric acid, e.g. B.O.V., so as to precipitate ferrous sulphate, withdrawing the precipitated ferrous sulphate together with an amount of acid substantially equal to that contained in the waste pickle liquor treated, evaporating the remaining mother liquor by the application of heat utilizing the steam thereby generated for heating the pickling liquor in the pickling stages and the concentrated acid for further precipitation of ferrous sulphate, separating the acid from the withdrawn ferrous sulphate, and using said acid in the pickling stage. The waste liquor may have a concentration of 12 per cent and its concentration may be raised to 55 per cent. The waste liquor may be added batchwise so that concentrated sulphuric acid, and the mother liquor remaining after the separation of ferrous sulphate evaporated in situ, e.g. by means of a steam coil. Alternatively the mother liquor may be concentrated in a separate vessel, and the reconcentrated acid returned to the precipitating vessel, enabling the waste liquor to be added continuously.
