Abstract

Aluminium nitrate substantially free from iron is precipitated by adding nitric acid to the solution obtained by attacking aluminous ores, for example, leucite or gangue or mineral refuse, with nitric acid, at a temperature sufficiently high to maintain in solution a sufficiently high proportion of iron nitrate. The iron content of aluminium nitrate separated at temperatures of from 1-40 DEG C. is shown. Potassium nitrate obtained by evaporating the mother liquor may be heated at 125 DEG C. in a suitable vessel to decompose contaminating iron and aluminium nitrates, with recovery of the nitrous vapours evolved. The residue is lixiviated and filtered, and the pure salt subsequently crystallized. Specification 246,827 [Class 1 (ii), Inorganic compounds, other than &c.], is referred to.
