Abstract

A process for the production of Al-Si alloys comprises heating alumina, silica elemental silicon and a carbonaceous reducing agent in a furnace to produce a crude alloy which is tapped and cooled to produce a purified Al-Si alloy liquid phase and solids comprising Si and Al-Si eutectic. The solids are removed and comminuted, the coarse fraction (i.e. that retained on a screen of from 30-300 U.S. standard mesh size) being substantially pure Al-Si alloy, which may be returned to the crude alloy or to the purified alloy, and fine fraction containing elemental silicon which can then be recycled to the furnace feed. When impure feed materials have been used the fine fraction (preferably after further comminution tc-270 mesh) may be subjected to flotation in an aqueous solution containing a soluble fluoride salt and a fluorine containing acid. The Al-Si alloy may be treated with liquid Pb, Zn or Hg in a conventional manner to extract commercial purity aluminium.
