Abstract
A mixture of iron pyrites ashes and sodium chloride is roasted, firstly in an oxidizing atmosphere and then in a reducing atmosphere, at 650 DEG -900 DEG C. to produce magnetic iron oxide which is sufficiently pure, e.g. for siderurgical use. It is preferred to crush the ashes of iron pyrites and intimately mix them with the salt prior to roasting. The incandescent product may be quenched under water, in which case non-ferrous metals may be recovered from the solution so formed whilst the magnetic iron oxide is obtained by electromagnetic separation from the insoluble residue. Metal compounds may also be obtained from the gases coming from the roasting chamber, e.g. by electrostatic precipitation.
