Abstract
250,991. Moulden, J. C., Taplin, B., and Metals Production, Ltd. Oct. 29, 1924. Dry processes of extracting copper-Oxidized copper ores are heated to a temperature below the melting point of copper, for example to 500-700‹ C., with a carbonaceous reducing agent in the presence of a halogen or a halogen compound, preferably sodium or calcium chloride, which is either added or is originally present in the ore, whereupon copper is reduced and is found in a metallic condition amongst the charge. The product after cooling, preferably in a non-oxidizing atmosphere, may be leached with an ammoniacal solvent, or the copper mav be separated therefrom by sifting or by gravity concentration. If the ore contains free alkaline matter, this may be removed or neutralized prior to the reduction. The charge may be heated in layers or while agitated, and it may be preliminarv heated to about 700‹ C. before admixture with the carbonaceous material. In the apparatus shown, the ore is passed from a hopper B through a rotary furnace A and the hot product is mixed with carbonaceous fuel and salt from a hopper E and passed through a rotary furnace G, an extension G' of which is provided with cooling means G<2>, G<3>. Specifications 16667/08, 185,242, 209,020, [Class 29, Cooling &c.], and 216,462 are referred to.
