Abstract

Metalliferous materials such as mattes, particularly white metal mattes, tin ore, tin slag, slag from solder-melting, or mixtures of ore, matte, or slags with other tin-bearing material are heated with a bisulphate such as nitre cake and with a reducing agent such as carbon, so as to convert all the metals into sulphides. The heating may be effected in a reverberatory furnace. The product is leached with water. The insoluble portion contains the copper and lead as sulphides and is practically a copper matte. Tin and antimony are dissolved as thiostannate and thioantimonate. The solution may be electrolized to obtain metallic antimony, the tin being then obtained as sulphide by acidulating the solution and may be roasted to oxide and reduced to metal. Alternatively the mixed solution may be treated with an acid and the antimony and tin sulphides roasted to oxides and then reduced. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers to the use of a "sulphatizing material such as nitre cake." This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
