328,564. Powell, A. R., Deering, E. C., and Johnson, Matthey & Co., Ltd. Jan. 28, 1929. Dry and matte processes of extracting platinum group metals.-Platinum group metals are recovered from ores &c. containing chromite by oxidizing the material to form chromates and ferric oxide, and smelting the product by a lead blast furnace method or with matte-forming materials as described in Specification 316,063. The chromite material may be roasted with lead oxide in a reverberatory furnace, preferably with addition of lime or other basic material: the roasted product is then briquetted with or sintered with silica and smelted in a blast furnace to obtain lead containing the platinum group metals and an iron-lime silicate containing the chromic oxide. In a modified method the chromite material is roasted with alkalies to form sodium and calcium chromates, which may be leached out, the residue being smelted with silica and matte-forming materials as described in Specification 316,063, to collect the platinum group metals in a matte.
