Abstract

Manganese oxide and sulphate and salts thereof in general. - The manganese content of raw materials is rendered susceptible to selective leaching by a solution of a salt such as an ammonium salt by subjecting the material to the action of a reducing gas and added water vapour at a temperature not exceeding 850‹ C., and cooling the product under non-oxidizing conditions, as by means of a countercurrent of reducing gas or quenching in water or the leaching solution. Iron present may be rendered insoluble and magnetic by conducting the heat treatment at a temperature not exceeding 450‹ C. in the presence of water vapour, which may either be added, or be formed in the process. The requisite temperature may be obtained by using a combustible gas as reducing agent and adding sufficient air for partial combustion: the necessary water vapour may be formed in this way when the gas contains free or combined hydrogen.
