Abstract
Carbon and other impurities, such as nitrogen, sulphur, phosphorus, and oxygen, are removed from iron, steel and alloy steels by heating them at 600-1100 DEG C. in an atmosphere of hydrogen or hydrogen-containing gas in the presence of metallic calcium or a calcium-containing substance such as calcium silicide or calcium hydride which decomposes the compounds formed by the combination of hydrogen with the impurities and forms stable calcium compounds which are incapable of reacting with the iron &c. In an example, a silicon steel containing 4 per cent of silicon and 0,04 of carbon was treated for 8 hours at a temperature of 950 DEG C. in a hydrogen atmosphere and in the presence of metallic calcium. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 260,646, [Class 72].
