Abstract
In a process for heat-treating, particularly annealing, melting or sintering, metals and alloys in a non-oxidizing protective gas atmosphere, the atmosphere consists of mercury which is recycled between the points of condensation and evaporation. The mercury vapours may be produced in the furnace itself, of which several are described (see Group XII), in a separate vaporizer or it may be introduced into the furnace as an amalgam with the material to be treated. The vapour may also be supplied to the furnace in a superheated condition when it helps to heat the material being treated.
