Abstract
A metal article, capable of cementation by carbon and silicon, is case-hardened by heating it in the presence of an organic silicon compond which contains at least one carbon atom of an organic radical united to silicon and which decomposes at the treatment temperature. The compounds used may be organo-silicon oxides, ethers and diethers, hydrides and chlorides, silicols or polymeric silicones and, by selection of the compounds the ratio of carbon to silicon may be varied. The compounds may be decomposed on contact with the metal or previously decomposed or used in conjunction with a reducing or inert gas, which latter may also be used to produce a pressure higher than atmospheric. The metal may be immediately quenched or cooled in air and reheated and quenched. The silicon content may be over 7 per cent but a silicon of over 1.5 per cent and a carbon of not above 2.2 per cent in the surface is preferred. If the silicon/carbon ratio is high free silicon may be deposited on the surface.
