Abstract

A moulded electrode, e.g. of titanium or zirconium, for melting metals in an arc comprises a mixture consisting of a predominant quantity of the metal to be melted and a small quantity of a compound of the metal which compound has a higher melting point than the metal. The compound may be present in admixture with the metal or as an internal or external skeleton to the electrode or as a surface coating, and may be formed by heating the moulded body of the electrode in an atmosphere of oxygen and/or nitrogen or in gases or vapours containing silicon, boron, or carbon to temperatures at which there is partial formation of oxide, nitride, borides, carbides or silicides. Alternatively the moulded body may be heated in contact with silicon, boron, or carbon in powder form. It is stated that the electrode so produced may be used for many melts.
