Abstract
Aluminium nitride is made by forming a mixture of finely divided aluminium metal and aluminium nitride and/or aluminium fluoride, nitriding the mixture by passing nitrogen gas thereover at a temperature ranging from 800 DEG -1100 DEG C., raising the temperature of the mixture to 1900 DEG C., while passing a stream of inert gas thereover, cooling the mixture, and recovering aluminium nitride. Preferably the temperature of the mixture is raised from 800 DEG -1100 DEG C. to 1900 DEG C. at a rate of 450 DEG -550 DEG C. per hour. The aluminium metal may form 40-60% by weight of the mixture, which may contain 33% of aluminium nitride and 17% of aluminium fluoride or 41,5% of aluminium nitride and 17% of aluminium fluoride. When aluminium fluoride alone is admixed with aluminium metal the mixture may be heated to 825 DEG -850 DEG C. under nitrogen, the heating may be interrupted and resumed again when the temperature declines to below 825 DEG C. and the mixture may be subsequently heated in an inert atmosphere to 1400 DEG C. to cause sublimation of the aluminium fluoride from the reaction product. An example is given.
