Abstract

A method of purifying chromium comprises heating a mass of chromium or chromium alloy powder of average grain size 1/10 m.m. at a temperature of at least 600 DEG C. in a mixture of vapours of at least one halide of at least one metal in said mass for such time that no substantial sintering takes place and in such manner that oxygen, water vapour, ammonia, and nitrogen are excluded. The chromium or chromium alloy powder may be placed in a container with a halogen or a halide of one of the metals present and heated in a stream of pure hydrogen. The powder may also contain a metallic oxide the heat of formation of which is higher than that of chromium oxide, e.g. magnesia. It is stated that the purified powder is very ductile and may be easily compressed.
