Abstract

Rotating bands for projectiles are made by sintering powdered iron or carbon steel which has previously been heated in ammonia gas to 250-510 DEG C. to render the metal resistant to wear without increasing its hardness. The sintering is carried out under pressure, for example 3 to 4 metric tons per square centimetre, and the temperature required for sintering may be lowered by chemically depositing 0.8-2.0 per cent by weight of copper on to the iron powder by immersion in an ammoniacal solution of copper sulphate which contains tartaric acid.
