Abstract

560,986. Obtaining coherent masses from powdered metals. RENNERFELT, I. Aug. 20, 1942, No. 11723. [Class 82 (i)] Objects are produced from finely-divided pig iron by pressing or sintering a granulated material produced by rapidly cooling pig iron in a cooling medium such as water, steam or air and submitting the grains to a dry oxidizing or decarburizing process. The grains may be further subdivided and heated in a reducing atmosphere such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide or illuminating gas which may be mixed with nitrogen before, during, or after the decarburizing process. The sintering or compressing may be carried out in a reducing atmosphere and the granulated material may be mixed with other metallic or non-metallic solid substances or with a solution which, by heating produces a coating of a metal or metal alloy on the surface of the grains or with a solution of sugar starch or other organic matter for producing a coating on the grains. Specification 551,147 is referred to.
