558,810. Obtaining coherent masses from powdered metals. RENNERFELT, I. Aug. 20, 1942, No. 11722. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] Iron nickel, or cobalt articles are made from the finely powdered or granulated metals by decarburizing the grains in hot gas, for example a mixture of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen, or by heating in a metal oxide, forming a coating of oxide on the grains, reducing the oxide coating for example by means of the carbon remaining in the grains or by a reducing gas such as hydrogen, and moulding the decarburized grains to a solid body by pressure. Metal, for example iron, nickel, or cobalt, produced by decomposition of carbonyls, or carbon such as graphite, charcoal, or lampblack may be mixed with the grains before the pressing operation. Tubular or channel shaped articles may be produced by using suitable moulds. Specifications 484,662, 504,122, and 514,491 are referred to.
