Abstract

A composition for providing a coating to withstand wear at high temperatures contains in percentage by weight: .chromium carbide.70-90 .nickel.8-24 .chromium.2- 6 and may be applied by the detonation coating process disclosed in Specifications 742,387 and 742,458. In an example, acetylene at 1,5 cu. ft./min., oxygen at 1,8 cu. ft./min., and nitrogen at 2,2 cu. ft./min. were introduced into a detonation gun to form a mixture having an oxygen/carbon ratio of 1,2. Finely divided powder consisting of 85% by weight chromium carbide and 15% by weight of nickel-chromium alloy (80% Ni/20% Cr by weight) suspended in a nitrogen carrier gas of 0,6 cu. ft./min. was introduced at a rate of 30-32 gm./minute, so that the detonable mixture contained 46 volume per cent. of nitrogen. The mixture was detonated four times per second.
