Abstract

In a process of manufacturing articles the surface of which is formed of a carbide of a metal of sub-group A of the 4th, 5th and 6th groups of the Periodic Table and of a metal of the iron group, powders of the two metals are mixed, pressed, moulded and sintered and finally subjected to surface carburizing. Tungsten powder may be mixed with 3-20 per cent of cobalt powder and the mixture moulded, pressed, and sintered. The sintered body may then be machined and refined by quenching from 1400-1500 DEG C and tempering at 600-700 DEG C after which is carburized at 1200-1450 DEG C in an atmosphere of city gas or hydrogen charged with a hydrocarbon vapour, e.g. benzol.
