Abstract

In a method of heat treating a duplex body comprising an iron component and a steel component at least one of which is formed of sintered particles the body is heated to a temperature above the recrystallizing temperature of iron and above the critical temperature of steel and then cooled so that the hardness of the steel component is increased or restored to its original value while that of the iron is unchanged or decreased. As applied to projectiles, the driving band may be made from powdered iron, swaged or otherwise attached to the steel body and the whole heated to the required temperature and quenched thereby hardening the steel body but leaving the iron driving band in the soft condition. The heating may be carried out in an atmosphere of molecular nitrogen, pre-cracked ammonia or a mixture of hydrogen and hydrocarbon gases which do not carburize the iron or decarburize the steel.
