Abstract

In a heat treatment process for cast iron, the first and second graphitizing stages, isothermal hardening, tempering, or spheroidizing anneal, are undertaken in a fluidised layer consisting of a flowable refractory material and a gas mixt. consisting of the most favourable compsn. of combustion gas, air and exhaust gases; and the fluidisation is controlled to suit the heating of the castings to a constant temp. determined by the heat treatment cycle required. The gases are pref. mixed to obtain an inert atmos. at 900-1050 degrees C for the first graphitizing stage, the gas mixt. then being used for fluidisation and heat-transfer during subsequent treatment at 200-750 degrees C. Used for heat treating white iron in the mfr. of malleable cast iron.
