Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce uniform thickness and dense black layer of triiron tetraoxide by a method wherein the iron based product is heated in a furnace under nonoxidizing or reducing atmosphere and treated with high temperature steam to prevent formation of ferric oxide which used to occur in conventional method. CONSTITUTION:In steam treatment of the iron or iron based alloy products, the products are heated to about 350 deg.C in the furnace under innert gas such as N2 or reducing atmosphere such as NH3, and high temperature steam is introduced for steam treatment. This prevents formation of reddish brown ferric oxide as formed in conventional method, and intead forms dense black layer of triiron tetraoxide having uniform thickness over the entire surface. For example, this method applied to a drill gives an oxide layer whose thickness (dotted line) is much more uniform than that (solid line) obtained in air furnace, and ferric oxide cannot be found.
