Abstract

PURPOSE: To toughen steel material for case hardening by subjecting said material to carburizing or carbo-nitriding and hardening at the specific temperatures at the heat-treating of a small member made of the steel material for case hardening.
CONSTITUTION: The small part such as engraving and printing bar or the like produced of case hardening steel is heated to 900W930°C in a CO gas or CH4 gas atmosphere, whereby it is subjected to carburizing. In the case of making carbo- nitriding, NH3 gas or C2N2 gas is mixed in said CO or CH4 gas and the mixed gases are used. The small part having been subjected to carburizing or carbo- nitriding is cooled down to a temperature range from 650W730°C, after which it is put in oil or water of 30W150°C to be quench-hardened. The surface hardness is as extremely hard as about HV800 and the inside is soft as HV280W300 at 0.4W 0.6mm, thus the properties of superior toughenss are provided.
