Abstract

PURPOSE:To form a uniform carburized layer of fine crystal grains on the surface of a steel material, by repeating surface cleaning, carburizing, diffusion of carbon, cooling by inert gas of the material to be treated. CONSTITUTION:A steel material to be carburized is put into a vacuum furnace and the surface thereof is cleaned by heating. The surface of the steel is carburized by introducing a carburizing gas into the furnace. Then the steel material is subjected to diffusion treatment in order to diffuse the carbon, which has been adsorbed on the surface and made into solid solution, into the inside of the material. Thereafter, the steel material is quenched by the introduction of an inert gas such as nitrogen. These operations are repeated two or more times so that the crystal grains are prevented from becoming coarse, and a carburized layer of fine crystal grains and of uniform thickness is formed.
