Abstract

In a process of forming a diffusion coated ferrous article in which the diffusion coating is ferritic and contains at least 20% Cr and at least 1% Ni or is austenitic and has a Cr content above 12% and a combined Cr and Ni content above 30%, the ferrous base is contacted with a molten composition containing Ni and Cr and a metal of Group IIa of the Periodic Table which has a melting point not above 900 DEG C. The preferred Group IIa metal is calcium although barium, strontium and magnesium may be used. A fluoride or chloride of a metal of Group Ia or IIa may also be added and the preferred temperature of the treatment is 900-1300 DEG C. The coating is formed by immersing the ferrous base in a molten bath of calcium and powdered Ni and Cr or Ni and Fe/Cr. A molten Ca/Zn transfer agent may also be used and in a further embodiment the coating is formed from a powder mixture of Ca, Ni and Cr which is sandwiched between ferrous bases and the assembly is then heated to 900-1300 DEG C. The process is effected in an inert atmosphere and many examples of different bath compositions are given. Specification 964,323 is referred to.
