Abstract

PURPOSE:To effectively supress the decarburization of steel materials for wire during the heating period by providing a borax-coated layer containing a carburizing agent on the surface of the steel material to be heated to a rolling temperature and then an antioxidant-coated layer on the borax-coated layer. CONSTITUTION:A steel material 4 for a wire to be heated to a rolling temperature is preheated to 60-80 deg.C, and a 1:1-1:0.1 mixture of a carburizing agent 1 (of a grain size of 10 microns or less) and borax 2 (of a grain size of 10 microns or less) as a low-melting flux is coated on the surface of the preheated steel material 4 to form a coating layer. Then, an antioxidant coating layer 3 is formed on said coating layer. The steel material so treated is charged into a heating furnace. The amounts of the former mixture and the latter antioxidant to be coated are 50-100g/m<2> and 100-150g/m<2>, respectively.
