Abstract
Crucibles and tools for use with molten metal or salt baths, including furnaces to contain molten materials and tools for holding and supporting articles to be treated, are provided with a heat-resisting protective coating of such a composition that it is viscous or plastic at the temperature of the melt. The coating may be made for example of mixtures of boric acid, boric oxide, phosphoric anhydride, borates, and phosphates, with or without the addition of refractory materials such as graphite and asbestos, and its specific gravity is preferably about the same as that of the melt with which it is to be in contact. The coating may be applied by dipping the articles into the mixture in molten form, or by sprinkling or painting. The surface of the article may be roughened mechanically or chemically before the coating is applied; for example, an iron crucible may be coated with aluminium, heated to 1000 DEG C., and the surface subsequently rendered porous by treatment with dilute acid or alkalies. An outer layer of solid heatresisting material in the form of powder, grains, or plates may be applied to the plastic coating.
