Abstract

<PICT:0574309/IV/1> Polythene sheets, containers and removable liners are produced by first coating a rigid and impervious surface with a separating agent such as a high melting point grease, aluminium stearate, sodium silicate or a detergent, and then covering with a composition comprising normally solid polythene by positioning said surface at an angle to the horizontal, heating the surface to a temperature between 30 DEG C. below the melting point of the composition and 210 DEG C., allowing said composition in the molten state to flow over said surface and cooling the surface to convert the composition to the solid state. According to the preferred method of operating, the surface of a drum 1 is coated with a separating agent and, together with a polythene-charged distributer 2, is placed in an air oven at 140 DEG C. The polythene melts and flows evenly down the sides of the drum, leaving a coating which, after cooling, is stripped off. Plain metal surfaces may be treated in a similar manner. Compositions consisting of polythene and 5 to 50 per cent polyisobutylene are particularly suitable. Specifications 551,339 and 566,745, [both in Group III], are referred to.
