Abstract
527,725. Surface hardening metal articles. NATIONAL CYLINDER GAS CO. April 13, 1939, No. 11274. Convention date, April 16, 1938. [Class 72] In the surface hardening of a metal article 10 by progressively advancing a sheet-like flame produced by an elongated nozzle 30 of an oxyacetlylene torch 25 to heat successive portions of the surface to the critical temperature and then chilling such portions immediately by a stream of water directed thereon from a nozzle 32 fitted into a supply pipe the heating and melting of the boundary edges of the surface is prevented by the application of a coating of heat resisting material 20 to the marginal surfaces at an angle to the surface treated. The heat resistant material may comprise an alkaline metal silicate used alone or as a binder, plumbago or other fire-resisting substances such as fireclay, alundum cement, silicon carbide, magnesite, asbestos, silica and porcelain powders such as sillimanite, made into a paste solution or suspension with binders such as sodium or sodium aluminium silicate, dextrine, glue, glucose or isinglass. In the drawing, the shaded portion only is covered with the material 20.
