Abstract

Surfaces of a body to be exposed to heat are coated with rice hull ash to increase the tolerance of the body to heat. The body may be a refractory brick, a furnace lining of nonmetallic or metallic nature, or a sheet. In an embodiment of the invention, a fire brick for a furnace lining is coated on the surface to be exposed to heat with an aluminous cement of iron oxide content 7%, and then, before the cement has set, with rice hull ash, thereafter allowing the cement to set. The body may be coated during its manufacture, e.g. in the manufacture of a refractory body the bonding material thereof being aluminous cement, the rice hull ash may be applied to a surface of the body after the latter has been formed but before the cement has cured. The coating of iron with rice hull ash is mentioned.
