Abstract
596,521. Safes. SHAW-WALKER CO. July 28, 1945, No. 19357. Convention date, July 3, 1944. [Class 44] A fire-resisting container 10 comprising a metal casing 14 lined with a heat-resisting material 15, such as gypsum plaster, has a relatively thin layer of insulating material 19 expansible under heat, such as vermiculite, disposed in its natural unexpanded state between the casing and lining, so that, when the container is exposed to fire, the effective thickness of the insulating lining is increased (shown in part in Fig. 4), since the material 19 expands and fills the spaces which would otherwise be formed between the casing 10 and lining 15. An inner metal shell 16 (Fig. 4), to which vermiculite may also be applied, may enclose the lining 15 which may be formed by moulding or in separate slabs. The vermiculite, in its natural granular state and mixed with a light binding material, may be applied with a trowel or may be sprayed on to either the inner surface of the casing 14 or the outer surface of the lining 15, before the parts are assembled. Alternatively, when the main lining 15 has been inserted in separate slabs spaced slightly from the casing 14, the vermiculite, in its natural dry state or combined with an adhesive binder, may be poured from a hopper into the spaces so formed ; it may also be employed along the joints of the slabs.
