Abstract

Lightweight porous refractories having insulating properties are made from a mixture of rice hull ash, an aluminous cement of a type containing not more than 3% iron oxide, and a filler of a type containing not more than 3% iron oxide. Preferably the iron oxide contents are as low as possible. Rice hull ash contains above 96% silica, a typical full analysis being given. The filler may be reclaimed fire brick or a mixture thereof with pearlite. Refractory bodies are produced by moulding the above mixture with sufficient water to provide the necessary plasticity, no compacting or firing being necessary. After moulding but before setting takes place the bodies may be coated with rice hull ash on one or more surfaces which are to be exposed to heat.
