Abstract
Refractories containing magnesia and a magnesium silicate have 1-10 per cent of calcium fluoride added to them in order to react with any low-melting silicate such as monticellite and transform it to a silicate of higher melting point. On firing, the fluoride flows readily throughout the mass of the refractory and is finally decomposed. The refractory contains at least 70 per cent magnesia, and may also contain chromite. The amount of fluoride required is obtained by subtracting the molecular equivalent of lime in the refractory from twice the molecular equivalent of silica and multiplying the result by 78.
