Abstract
Refractory bricks are produced by firing at a temperature of 1000 DEG to 1700 DEG C. a mixture comprising (a) magnesia containing more than 90% MgO by weight, more than 2% by weight of ferric oxide, more than 2% by weight of dicalcium ferrite and a lime-silica ratio by weight of over 2; (6) chromite which is able to react with the magnesia with conversion of its dicalcium ferrite to magnesium ferrite and with the formation of a compound or compounds containing calcium and silica, i.e. either merwinite or dicalcium silicate or both, the amounts of (a) and (b) together being such that the total MgO content is at least 90% by weight and the total SiO2 content is 1-4% by weight. Preferably the magnesia contains less than 0.6% by weight of silica. The chromite is present in the proportion of 5-35% of the total weight of the refractory mixture. The chrome ore contains 1-4% by weight of silica, and the total silica content of the mixture should not exceed 4% by weight the ratio by weight of lime to silica in the mixture being in excess of 1.
