Abstract

Refractory sintered magnesia is produced from raw materials low in iron by adding to the charge a small proportion of preformed calcium ferrite, or iron oxide and calcium oxide, or substances yielding these compounds, in such relation that the proportion of lime to ferric oxide is not greater than the stoichiometric proportion corresponding to the compound calcium ferrite CaO.Fe2O3, additions of a kind other than lime and ferric oxide being made, or being present as impurities, only in such quantities that the formation of calcium ferrite is not impeded. The lime may be present in the raw material as an impurity. Where the raw material contains acid silicates, or substances yielding such silicates on calcination, sufficient basic material is added to combine with the silicates, and if lime is this basic material sufficient is added to provide an excess to combine with the added ferric oxide. The magnesite may be in a coarsely crushed form and the additions finely crushed. In addition to preformed calcium ferrite, ferric oxide or materials yielding ferric oxide may be added to the charge. The process may also be applied to improve magnesia that has already been sintered. The amount of the ferruginous additions is usually smaller than 10 per cent by weight of the magnesia, but in special cases, e.g. for bricks resistant to sudden changes of temperature, may be equal to or even greater than the magnesia content. In an example, magnesite poor in lime, silica and iron, is mixed with 15 per cent of quick lime and 5 per cent of ferric oxide and is fired at 1350 DEG C. Other examples are given.
