Abstract
544,967. Ceramic electric insulators &c. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. March 5, 1941, No. 2967. Convention date, May 31, 1940. [Class 22] A ceramic, e.g. for sparking- plug insulators is made by firing a finely powdered mixture of oxides of beryllium, magnesium, and aluminium in proportions represented by the area AWXL of the diagram, the more useful proportion corresponding to areas ABCDE, FGHI and JKL. Up to 20 per cent. of silica may be incorporated, to lower the sintering temperature, e.g. from 1,785‹ C. to 1,530‹ C. by the addition of 7.6 per cent. silica to a composition of 39 per cent. beryllia, 4 per cent. magnesia and 57 per cent. alumina. A temporary binder such as a phenolic resin, and a lubricant may be used in the preparation of the insulators. The oxides may be used as such or as silicates, aluminates, spinel, &c.
