Abstract

1,137,080. Refractories. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 18 Aug., 1966 [22 Oct., 1965], No. 16776/67. Divided out of 1,137,079. Heading C1J. [Also in Division H1] A crystalline solid is prepared by mixing and sintering together at crystal forming temperatures (a) a major proportion by wt. of aluminium oxide and a remainder (b) consisting of a major proportion of an alkali metal oxide and a minor proportion of an oxide of a metal having a valency of 1 or 2, but not being the same as the major constituent of the remainder, the amount of (a) being in excess of 80% by weight of the solid and the percentage by weight of the alkali metal oxide in the remainder being at least 60%. In an example, MgO is mixed with Al 2 O 3 and fired, the fired mixture being mixed with sodium carbonate and fired. The resulting product is admixed with a wax lubricant, pressed into cylinders, the lubricant removed by heating and the cylinders sintered. The composition of the cylinders is 6À3 wt. per cent Na 2 O, 2À18 wt. per cent MgO and 91À52 wt. per cent Al 2 O 3 .
