Abstract
1452849 Suitable alumina compositions INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 20 Nov 1974 [2 Jan 1974] 50351/74 Headings C1A and C1J A raw material admixture for use in the manufacture of a sintered object, comprises alumina and the ternary glass composition MgO-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 or CaO-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 to act as a sintering aid. The admixtures may be of high alumina content, e.g. 80% or more by weight. The alumina preferably comprises at least 95% by weight of alpha-alumina. Preferably the composition of the MgO-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 ternary glass is one of the compositions lying in the phase line joining compositions having, by weight, the proportions 17 : 15 : 67 and 30 : 27 : 43 on the ternary phase diagram for that glass. For the CaO-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 ternary glass the proportions are preferably, i.e. 18 : 15 : 67 and 40 : 22 : 38. Ceramic casting compositions comprising the admixture, a resin binder and a solvent may be prepared. In the example the compositions comprise Al 2 O 3 , glass, polyvinyl butyral, dioctyl phthalate, methanol, toluene and cyclohexanone. Objects, e.g. circuit boards may be formed by casting the compositions, evaporating the solvent and sintering the cast object. Electrical assemblies comprising a plurality of circuit boards may be prepared by conventional methods.
