Abstract

Refractory materials used in furnace construction such as silica, silicates of Al and other metals and metal oxides are coated with Al or an Al alloy e.g. Al/Mg by e.g. flame spraying and then heated to 900-1700 DEG C. in a reducing atmosphere whereby a barrier layer of Si is formed between the refractory and the aluminium. A further coating of a more highly refractory material such as ZrO2 may be sprayed as a rod or in liquid form over the first layer. The heating in a reduced atmosphere may be carried out either prior to the refractory e.g. a brick, being used, or during its use in a furnace.ALSO:Refractory materials used in furnace construction such as silica, silicates of Al and other metals and metal oxides are coated with Al or an Al alloy, e.g. Al/Mg by e.g. flame spraying and then heated to 900-1700 DEG C. in a reducing atmosphere whereby a barrier layer of Si is formed between the refractory and the aluminium.
