Abstract

593,795. Enamels. FERRO ENAMEL CORPORATION. July 17, 1944, No. 13649. Convention date, March 13. [Class 56] A slip for application to metallic articles by firing directly thereto, or over a previously fired porcelain enamel ground coat, comprises a suspension in an aqueous solution of a soluble silicate (e.g. sodium silicate of Baume 41‹), of an inorganic siliceous filler such as kaolin, a porcelain enamel frit, and a minor amount of uniformly dispersed organic material, such as hard asphalt or natural or synthetic resin, which, while not volatilizing at temperatures up to those normally prevailing during application and preliminary drying of the coating mixture (e.g. up to 350‹ F.), will be substantially completely driven off during firing (e.g. at 1500‹ F.). The surface texture of the finished coating may be controlled by varying either the proportions of the above ingredients or the time and temperature of firing, and additional materials such as colouring oxides may be included in the slip which may be ground to a mesh of 325, and applied by brushing, dipping or spraying. The frits for the ground coat and to be included in the slip may comprise a smelting of quartz, dehydrated borax, soda ash, sodium nitrate and fluorspar together with either (for the ground coat) feldspar, cobalt oxide, manganese oxide, black nickel oxide, calcspar and magnesium carbonate, or (for the production of an acid-resistant frit for inclusion in the slip as above) litharge titanium oxide and sodium silico-fluoride, the smelting temperature in the latter case being 2300‹ F. Titanium, tin, zinc, zirconium, &c. oxides may be used for opacifying, chromic oxide for a green finish, a fired mixture of chrome and copper oxides together with an opacifier for grey, or a complex oxide of chromium, zinc, iron, aluminium, titanium, antimony and magnesium oxides for olivedrab.
