Abstract

1418842 Catalytically active enamel BAYER RICKMANN GmbH 7 March 1973 [8 March 1972] 11007/73 Heading C1M [Also in Division F4] A process for the production of an enamel slip for use as a self-cleaning enamel layer for a cooking appliance, wherein an oxide and/or mixed oxide of natural origin, containing iron oxide and/or titanium oxide, is added to an enamel frit in a quantity in the range of from 25 to 90% by weight based on the total weight of the dry frit and oxidic compound, and wherein water is added to the resulting frit to produce an enamel slip. The oxide and/or mixed oxide may be rutile, ilmenite or chromite and may be ground to a grain size of 0À04-0À10 mm. A suitable frit comprises, in per cent by weight, 33-55% SiO 2 , 0-15% B 2 O 3 , 15-35% Li 2 O+ Na 2 O+K 2 O, 0-25% Al 2 O 3 + TiO 2 , 0-15% CaO+BaO, 0-10% ZnO + P 2 O 5 + ZrO 2 , 0-7% F- and optionally up to 3% by weight of cobalt oxide, nickel oxide, and/or copper oxide. A specific frit consists of, in per cent by weight, 44À4% SiO 2 , 3À4% Al 2 O 3 , 17% B 2 O 3 , 1À5% Li 2 O, 14% Na 2 O, 2% K 2 O, 5À8% CaO, 6À8% BaO, 0À2% CoO, 0À9% NiO and 4% F-. Other ingredients of the slip specified are clay and borax. The enamel slip may be applied to the metallic substrate, preferably steel plate, by conventional enamelling techniques such as spreadcoating, dip-coating or spray-coating. The coated surface is preferably fired at 500- 980‹ C., e.g. 760-860‹ C. The enamel slip may be ground until the residue on a sieve with 3600 meshes/cm.<SP>2</SP> was 1% by weight, and may be applied in a quantity of 300 gm./m.<SP>2</SP>. In Example 3 a black pigment is added to the mill batch whilst in Example 4 the addition comprises a mixture of natural rutile and pyrolusite.
