Abstract

824,527. Vitreous enamel frit. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Jan. 6, 1958 [Jan. 7, 1957], No. 474/58. Class 56. A vitreous enamel frit having a maturing temperature of 490 to 550‹C. and suitable for the enamelling of aluminium and aluminium alloys at least 70% of which consists of by weight 22 to 35% TiOz, 14 to 29% SiO 2 , 17 to 26% Na 2 O and 1 to 3% Li 2 O, said frit being either free from the following constituents or containing one or more of them in amounts of less than 0À1 % NiO, 0À1% MaO, 1À0% CoO, 4À0% Al 2 O 3 , 11À0% B 2 O 3 , 2À1% ZnO, 30À0% BaO, 4À0% CaO, 4À0% ZrO 2 . 0À5% PbO and 11À0% KzO. Any tendency for corrosion to be produced during firing is prevented by adding to the frit composition before melting 1 to 11 % and preferably 1 to 5% Sb 2 O 3 , depending upon the alkali content of the frit, the amount of chromate pre-treatment and the particular aluminium surface being treated. The components are mixed, heated to 900-1200‹C. and then poured into water to form a frit which is dried at 50‹C. and then ground with or without the addition of pigments, specifying agents, dispersing and bonding agents. The surface to be treated is cleaned, pretreated with chromate and fired at 480-580‹C. for 2-30 minutes. After cooling the surface is treated with the enamel composition by e.g. spraying, dipping, stencilling or brushing and is then fired at 490-550‹C.
