Abstract

A titania-opacified frit composition includes vitrifiable ingredients and an inorganic sulphate concentration of 0.4-2.4% by weight calculated as SO3. Suitable sulphates are sulphates of Na, K, Li, NH4, Ba, Zn or Ti; other sulphur-bearing materials oxidizable to sulphate under conditions of enamel application may be used. An example of a frit composition is, in per cent by weight: SiO2, 20-40; TiO2, 6-20; B2O3, 15-24; Al2O3, 0-8; Na2O, 0-20; K2O, 0-20; Li2O, 0-5; P2O5, 0-5; F2, 0-15; SO3, 0.4-2.4. The frit may be applied over a ground coat or directly to ferrous metal surfaces and fired at 110 DEG -1350 DEG F. The TiO2 precipitates substantially in the anatase form.
