Abstract

In the hot extrusion of metal there is applied between the billet and extrusion tools a lubricant comprising a mixture of at least 0.5% of an oxide or oxides of the metal to be extruded. The mixture may also contain other metal oxides having a greater affinity for oxygen than the extrusion metal oxide and another component which renders the mixture plastically deformable but not viscous or liquid at the extrusion temperature and pressure, whereby the extruded product is coated with the mixture to protect it from oxidation. When extruding steel, iron oxide is used and may be mixed with sodium tetraborate. Alternatively, for extruding steel at 1100 DEG C. a metal oxide compound such as FeSiO3 or Fe2SiO4 may be used. Other examples of mixtures are: Fe2O3, SiO2, Al2O3, Na2O, FeO; Fe2O3, SiO2, Al2O3, K2O, Na2O; Fe2O3, Na2O, B2O3; FeO, SiO2, Fe2O3, MgO, H2O; FeO, SiO2, MgO, H2O; sodium borosilicate and Fe2O3. The mixture is introduced into the press as a powder, paste or a preformed disc using water glass as a binder. Powder may be applied to the billet whilst it is being heated and rotated or to the tools by means of a powder flame spraying device. The coating is removed from the extruded product by stretching or by surface-heating.
